DSM Purpose

When I started the role of DSM’s Global Climate Lead at the beginning of 2015, I was among the first people to build a theme-specific role with such a broad scope: covering both the internal operational side and business-related aspects, as well as external advocacy. It had effect, so within a few years we created similar roles for DSM’s two other sustainability focus areas: Circularity & Resources, and Health & Nutrition.

The climate-specific video below gives good insight into the “three pillars” along which I structured the great work and initiatives of everyone involved: IMPROVE - ENABLE - ADVOCATE. Apart from writing its script and narrative, imagining and visualizing it - together with designer Justus Bruns (CNVNC) - was a fun creative process. The audience for this video is all of DSM’s stakeholders, including employees.

The three agendas became the essence of DSM’s strategy and purpose, which was launched in 2018. For the evolution of DSM’s purpose, strong foundations (substance, KPIs, targets) were needed for each of them. On page 21-22 of the DSM Purpose Booklet, you can see how the “three pillar approach” I developed for the climate agenda is now at the heart of each of the three sustainability agendas, and together, how they form an important foundation for DSM’s purpose.

Together with other sustainability leaders at DSM, and of course many colleagues from different regions, functions and business groups, we extensively supported the evolution of DSM’s purpose and its pioneer and director, Inge Massen. The result? Check out the video above, and the paragraph below.
